Pollution Prevention
Stopping Air Pollution
At the Fukusaki Factory, when the boilers operate for an extended time, there are increased emissions of the air contaminants sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). We have therefore installed a new boiler, introduced electric water heaters, etc. In FY2019, due to the operation of new boiler facilities throughout the year, emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (Nox) became zero. For details, see the page on our Preventing Global Warming initiatives.
Chemical Management
At our Technical Development Institute and Skin Science Development Institute we comply with the Law
Concerning Reporting, etc., of Releases to the Environment of Specific Chemical Substances and Promoting
Improvements in Their Management* in the development and content design of our products to avoid risks to
people's health and the environment. Specifically, from the initial stages of development, we consider the
impact of our products on people's health and how their life cycle affects the environment. When designing
product content, we select raw materials paying due attention to the chemical substances specified under the
above-mentioned Law. In particular, as the preservative methylparaben is a specified chemical, we developed
ingredients that are preservative-free.
Another example of our effort is the volume calculation
undertaken at Fukusaki Factory of the release and transfer of the specified chemical substances. The data is
submitted to the Hyogo Prefectural Government and chemicals are managed appropriately, in strict compliance
with the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) system.
Wastewater Treatment
At the Fukusaki Factory we use a membrane separation and activated sludge process to treat with chemical
materials used in the production of cosmetics and the washing water from the manufacturing tanks and filling
equipment before release. The factory has also signed an agreement on pollution control with the town of
Fukusaki in Hyogo Prefecture. We are strengthening measures to prevent water pollution and thoroughly manage
the water quality of wastewater. Also, starting in September 2015 wastewater from the Fukusaki Factory began
to be discharged directly into Hyogo Prefecture's Fukusaki municipal sewage system, in effect relaxing
effluent standards, but Mandom has continued to set standards higher than agreed values and treats wastewater
accordingly. Also, the results of measuring water quality discharged into the sewage system are reported to
the town of Fukusaki once a month.
Furthermore, We have made equipment check lists more detailed to
anticipate equipment malfunctions and to make more visible the operation of such equipment.
