Our way of thinking about the ingredients for products
Safety is our top priority in manufacturing. When selecting ingredients for product development, we not only ensure their safety but also consider their environmental impact and any social ethical issues, while complying with the regulations of individual countries/regions. For “Dedication to Service (Oyakudachi)” to consumers, we offer products that are not only safe to use but also ensure that consumers feel safe while using them.

About the ingredient(s)
Alkyl sulfates are a type of surfactant that mixes water with oil and dirt. They clean the hair and skin
when washed away. In high concentrations, alkyl sulfates can irritate the skin. There is concern about
their carcinogenicity, but there is no clear scientific evidence for this concern, and alkyl sulfates are
not listed as carcinogens by international organizations or professional organizations of individual
countries.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After meeting the Mandom Safety Standards, we use alkyl sulfates with care to minimize irritation to the
scalp and skin.
About the ingredient(s)
Fragrances contain a variety of ingredients, some of which have been reported to cause allergies or
irritation.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
The use of fragrances in our products follows the laws and regulations of each country/region and the
International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standards. We also conduct safety evaluations to ensure
compliance with the Mandom Safety Standards.
About the ingredient(s)
Ultraviolet absorbers selectively absorb UV rays.
They are used in cosmetics to prevent UV rays
from causing skin damage such as sunburn and also from degrading the quality of the cosmetics. Some
ultraviolet absorbers are suspected of being endocrine disruptors and are under investigation. There is
also debate over their impact on marine coral, and their sale and use are banned in some countries and
regions, including the state of Hawaii.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations of individual countries/regions and meeting the
Mandom Safety Standards, we use ultraviolet absorbers in our products. Regarding their environmental
impact, we will carefully monitor the results of the investigation and respond appropriately.
About the ingredient(s)
BHT is a type of antioxidant that stabilizes the ingredients in products. It is suspected of being an
endocrine disruptor and is currently under investigation.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations of individual countries/regions and meeting the
Mandom Safety Standards, we use BHT in our products when this substance is needed to maintain their
quality.
About the ingredient(s)
We use silicones mainly in hair care products to improve the feel of hair, such as smoothing the way the
hair runs through the fingers.
There are indications that some silicones may persist in the environment, but their long-term effects are
still unclear.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
We use silicones with care to minimize their environmental impact.
About the ingredient(s)
Talc is a type of mineral. The main component of this white powder is hydrated magnesium silicate. Talc
is smooth to the touch and easy to spread, and it has excellent moisture absorption, but there are
concerns that some talc may contain asbestos, a carcinogen , as an impurity.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations of individual countries/regions and meeting the
Mandom Safety Standards, we select asbestos-free talc for our products.
About the ingredient(s)
This oil from palm fruits is odorless and colorless. It is widely used for a variety of purposes in
cosmetics as a raw material for glycerin, fatty acids, and other substances.
It has been pointed out that the development of some palm oil plantations may involve forest destruction,
violations of workers’ rights, or child labor.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
We joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2018 and strive to procure sustainable palm
oil.
About the ingredient(s)
Cosmetics may contain impurities* that may naturally occur in their ingredients or are generated during
their manufacturing process and remain in the end products. Some of the impurities are carcinogenic or
allergenic.
The amount of impurities in a product can be reduced through efforts to improve the manufacturing process
of the ingredients and closely examine the sources of raw materials.
* Such as heavy metals, organic solvents, 1,4-dioxane, acrylamide, diethanolamine, and formaldehyde
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
Regarding impurities, we constantly obtain and verify the latest information on their safety and the laws
and regulations of individual countries/regions. We also evaluate the ingredients we use. Based on our own
control standards, we ensure that our products contain only the minimum amounts of impurities that may
have safety concerns, such as heavy metals, organic solvents, 1,4-dioxane, acrylamide, diethanolamine, and
formaldehyde.
About the ingredient(s)
BHA, a type of antioxidant, is listed as a carcinogen by international agencies.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
We do not use BHA in accordance with the Mandom Safety Standards.
About the ingredient(s)
Preservatives in products prevent the growth of germs that may have contaminated them. We add them so
that our cosmetics remain hygienic and safe to use until the end. Some preservatives are suspected of
being carcinogenic or causing allergic reactions and are under investigation.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations of individual countries/regions and meeting the
Mandom Safety Standards, we use appropriate types and amounts of preservatives.
About the ingredient(s)
Plastic microbeads are a type of solid, water insoluble particles of 5 mm or less in diameter. They are
used as scrubs in rinse-off cosmetics. Plastic microbeads are so tiny that they may slip through the
filters in wastewater treatment plants and be released into rivers and the sea. Some people point out the
environmental impact of plastic microbeads such as marine pollution, and there are moves to ban their use
in various countries and regions, such as the EU and the United States.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
We have not used plastic microbeads in our rinse-off cosmetics since January 2018.
While closely monitoring legal and regulatory trends in individual countries/regions, we are preparing to
promptly respond to future changes in the laws and regulations.
About the ingredient(s)
Petrolatum is a hydrocarbon oil paste with a moisturizing effect. There used to be fears that some of the
impurities in petrolatum could irritate the skin, but thanks to improvements in its refining technology,
petrolatum is now known to be free of impurities and safe to use.
Approach to the use of ingredient(s)
After meeting the Mandom Safety Standards, we use highly pure, refined petrolatum.
